Job description

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: 

Performs a variety of cleaning and sanitizing work activities to maintain the worksite in a clean, safe, and healthy condition so that the physical environment presents no problem or interruption to the educational processes taking place within the facility.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education - High school diploma or an acceptable amount of specialized training and experience. 

Knowledge/Skills - Working knowledge of the equipment, tools, and materials used in custodial services work. Able to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people; fellow co-workers, building-level teaching staff, Administrators, and others with whom he/she comes into contact. Able to comprehend and follow oral and/or written instructions. Able to learn from direct training and practical experience.  

Experience - Possesses practical experience with an assortment of chemicals, machines, and equipment used in custodial services function. Some experience in custodial services preferred: examples- health/hospital facility cleaning; contracted cleaning company; custodial equipment cleaning supply sales.  


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Performs building cleaning, housekeeping, and minor maintenance work so that teachers and students can learn. 

Examples of Work Performed:

A. Performs mopping, vacuuming, and other maintenance/cleaning activities. B. Performs dusting of furniture, fixtures, and ledges, window cleaning, small painting projects, interior graffiti removal, and other general custodial activities. 

C. Cleans and scrubs restrooms, empties and washes garbage cans, baskets, and receptacles; sweeps shops, stairs and entrance areas, locker rooms, bleachers, sidewalks, and halls. 

D. When there is an immediate safety need changes light bulbs and replaces ceiling tiles at a height not greater than a 6’ ladder. 

2. Operates and uses custodial equipment, supplies, and tools that clean and maintain the building in order that the work is completed economically, efficiently, and safely. 

Examples of Work Performed: 

A. Performs buffing, scrubbing, rinsing, polishing, vacuuming, and other floor maintenance/cleaning activities. 

B. Uses correct “custodial procedures” so that equipment and cleaning products are used properly and safely. 

3. Provides Lead Custodian with inventory usage and data, equipment condition and needs, and building life/safety concerns in order that work can be assigned/completed in an efficient, economical, safe, and quality manner. 

Examples of Work Performed: 

A. Restocks disposable items and provides Lead Custodian with inventory usage and data. B. Writes/logs work orders for maintenance work as needed. 

4. Assists with building and grounds security and safety in order that the educational program is not interrupted. 

Examples of Work Performed: 

A. Processes all incoming and outgoing shipments in an accurate and timely manner.  

5. Performs other duties as assigned or required. 

Examples of Work Performed: 

A. Assists in loading/unloading and movement of furniture, books, equipment, chemicals, and supplies from trucks, hand trucks, dollies, classrooms, etc., and arranges rooms for special meetings and activities, such as setting up tables, additional chairs, etc. 

B. Locks/unlocks doors to perform work or to give entry to authorized personnel. C. Assists Grounds and Maintenance Departments by removing snow and ice from sidewalks and trash removal from outside entryways, grounds, containers/recycling.


WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk; hear, and occasionally sit. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds such as bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc.  

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and is acceptable for this environment. Specific hearing abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation, radio transmissions, and isolate voices in multiple conversations. The employee must independently transport him/herself to the job site as well as other sites in the District. 


EQUIPMENT / TOOLS/ MATERIALS USED:  

The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as strippers, degreasers, sprays, petroleum products, automatic scrubbers, ride-on scrubbers, side-by-side (slow speed) machine, propane, and electric high-speed burnishers, propane stripping machine, carpet, and upholstery extractors, up-right, backpack, and wet/dry vacuum cleaners and leaf blowers. 


REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: 

Lifting belts, gloves, eye protection and other PPEs as the work at hand may require or warrant. 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Assigned to 260-day work calendar; hours per day vary; compensation and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) as provided by the Board of Education.
